Our Team

Timothy McCarragher, MSW, Ph.D., LISW-S has been employed at The University of Akron since 2000. He has served as a faculty member, Director of the School of Social Work and Family Sciences (2008-present), and Associate Dean (2018-2023) and Interim Dean (2020-2023) of the College of Health and Human Sciences. Tim is UA’s Primary Investigator (PI) for Ohio’s University Consortium on Child and Adult Services (OUCCAS) and the PI for The University Partnership Program (UPP).

Tim currently serves as the PI for a range of other grants including funding from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the United Way, and the County of Summit ADM Board. Throughout his career he has written over 75 successfully funded grant applications.

During his time at The University of Akron, Tim has taught twenty different courses in the social work curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Since 2008, Tim has chaired the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Writing Panel and the Review Panel for the Transfer Assurance Guides for Social Work Curriculum in Ohio.

In 2024, Tim received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Akron Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. In 2015, he was selected as the Social Worker of the Year from the Canton Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Tim received the 2012 Faculty Engagement Award from the University Student Government at UA and received two Social Work Excellence awards from the Ohio Department of Health as a social work clinician.

Tim has a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from Case Western Reserve University, a MSW degree from Cleveland State University, an STL (Post Graduate Degree in Spiritual Theology) and STB (Graduate Degree in Theology) from the Pontificia Universitas Gregoriana in Rome, Italy, and a BA in English from the Pontifical College Josephinum.

A US Air Force veteran, Tim served as a Lieutenant at military bases in the UK and Italy.
